===The Reel Deel===
August’s grandfather was the millionaire adventurer, Baxter Hughes. On one of his many trips to the Heart of Africa, he encountered a lost tribe of natives who worshipped the spider god, “Buibui,” who took on the form of Goliath Birdeaters to interact with them.  Baxter himself had several encounters with the spirit during his time there, and eventually was forced to defend the tribe from invaders. In a last ditch effort to save the people he had come to know and love, Baxter accepted a loaded deal Buibui offered. Buibui would grant him the strength and the powers of the Spider in exchange for his firstborn son on his 21st birthday. The spirit would “take back what Baxter was lent.” 

Years later, Baxter and his native wife, Adila (“Justice”), had their firstborn son, Jefferson. Jefferson was a rebellious child, though he followed in his father’s footsteps in his own way. He moved to America at 18 with his “hussy,” Marylin (as his father put it), to get out from under his father’s shadow and make his own way. Marylin had August a mere 6 months after they were married upon arriving in America. 

2 years later, Marylin and Jefferson died in a car wreck. Unbeknownst to any of the family, Buibui decided to use Jefferson’s body after the wreck as a temporary vessel, morphing it as best it could, while slowly changing August to be “a more appropriate host befitting the Spider God.”  August was taken into a New England boarding school and remained there until the family money ran out at 13 years.  He was shipped off to the nearby city of Troy and has been residing at Mrs. Frieda’s for almost a year.

==Emma Vaerbond==

Red haired, short (4’9), scrawny, and precocious (“quit wearing clothes like that, you look silly”). She has five tally marks carved into the right side of her face, a scar she almost always hides with her bangs. The wound was actually so bad that some of her right-side teeth had to be pulled and are permanently missing.

In the eyes of those around her, Emma is a generally precocious and sometimes mischievous young girl. She’s exceptionally intelligent and tactically devious, defeating everyone in her age group--and even most adults--in any and all battles of wits. She’s seen as carefree, happy, and confident, which all awards her a number of friends in school--friends she usually “leads” in all intellectual pursuits.

Under the surface, though . . .

When she was eleven, she was assaulted by her father during a fit of drunken fury. He carved tallies into her cheeks, despite her protests, and after kicking him in the crotch, she ran away. She’s been with child services ever since.

This is problematic for her “style” in many ways, of course. From what the folk running the half-way house can tell (and actively try to restrict), Emma fancies older boys (late teens/early twenties) for being intellectually on par with herself and has no qualms actively seeking an older boyfriend. Secondly, she does science with plants that may or may not be legal according to United States law. Apparently she used to sell them as raw materials for pharmaceutical companies.

The second issue, which only a very select few are aware of, is that Emma is haunted by an eldritch horror from beyond time and space. He tells her to do horrible things. Sometimes she listens.

Needlessly mature for her age, Emma is mostly all right with everyone around her until one of two issues come up: 1. aggression, or 2. lectures about what girls her age should and should not do. Emma prefers to live without boundaries, which can often get her into trouble, especially when she’s doing something or the rather that a girl shouldn’t ever do before the age of 18. Or 21, for that matter.

Honestly, she just doesn’t care about age rolls. She’s been through hell and back before, and may as well have aged a decade in a single night. Emma thus feels superior to those of her age group, consequently refusing to subscribe to her prescribed age rolls.

Despite her intellectual standing, however, Emma is emotionally immature for her age. Though she will, for example, look for intellectual equality in a boyfriend, most boys of that age seek something more than just intelligent conversation, which, though her style of dress suggests otherwise, is not something she is emotionally able to deal with, at least not in a healthy and productive way.

Which wouldn't be such a problem if Emma didn't have some manner of feelings for him.

Another one of “Emma’s boys.” Emma once doted on Scott like a wounded kitten meant to be protected, but when the tables were turned, Scott defended her to the very best of his abilities. Scott is now Emma's boyfriend, and she honestly couldn't be happier about that. Or, rather, everything was completely fine before George kissed her . . .

Her hair is not quite long enough to hide the uneven stitching that curls up from the right corner of her mouth or across the bride of her nose, but it’s better than nothing. She prefers turtlenecks or high-collared jackets so she can pull them up. Wears gloves if she can-- if not she goes for long sleeves she can hide her battered hands in. Manny doesn’t know a lot about his life. He never knew his parents or why he looks the way he does. He just knows the simple things he likes: Eating meat, sleeping, and not being picked on. Manny’s been raised by his uncle for as long as he could remember, but the life of a rock star is tough enough without having to care for a devil kid.

Uncle V once enrolled Manny into a school where he immediately became miserable. Kids would push him and bully him for being weird, girls would laugh at him, and once a teacher even spit on his face. This made Manny become very reserved, grow his hair out to hide his budding horns, and have an intense want for a real friend. Uncle V eventually pulled him out of the public school, deciding to pay for a private tutor, one who knew how to keep their mouth shut.

Despite his wild rock star life, Manny’s uncle actually attempted to teach Manny values and morals. Don’t steal unless you really have to. Don’t lie unless it will keep you out of trouble. Don’t bite because you could cause someone to need an amputation. Most notably though, Uncle V has instilled an interesting view of justice in the boy. He’ll stand up against what he thinks wrong, even if it’s stupid to do so, and he believes completely in an ‘eye for an eye’ philosophy.

It should be noted that Manny’s entered the halfway home at a very tender time in his life. While awkwardly facing puberty, he’ll also have to deal with his devilish features becoming more difficult to conceal. His horns can only stay small enough to hide behind his hair for so long…

Tall and fairly thin.  His light-blonde hair is fairly messy, but tends towards a “slicked back” look.  His soda-bottle glasses are thick enough to distract you from his eyes, which are a weird sorta gold color and have a much larger than normal iris.  He always wears a hoodie or long jacket (regardless of the temperature) to hide the plumage (including wing and tail feathers) covering his upper body and arms.  As a result, he smells like a locker room inside an old barn.

Ty’s short, he may be 14, but he hasn’t really hit full-on puberty yet. He’s a skinny little thing, and 5 foot 2. You can tell he’s going to be tall, but he ain’t there now.  He keeps his hair close shave, almost shorn. He’s real pale. Super pale even. Hasn’t seen the sunlight in 20 years, lives in a cave, alabaster doll: pale. His eyes are so brown they’re black, it basically looks like he’s all pupil. Small nose, ears he hasn’t grown into, but there’s something a little mischievous about him. Hard to nail down.

His posture isn’t great. It’s like he’s in pain. His head always seems to be cocked at at least  a five degree angle. He seems somber and sad, but at least one corner of his mouth is always quirked up in something resembling a smile. He’s usually in an oversized hoody. It’s ratty and a little threadbare, but always clean. If you had to guess, it wasn’t purchased for him, but he seems more comfortable in it than out of it. A nice wristwatch is always on his arm. It’s too expensive for any kid in a halfway home. How he’s kept it is any one’s guess. His eyes are closed more often than not. It’s kind of creepy when he’s talking to you.

Ty is totally a genius. You won’t notice cause he’s a little distracted and he tends towards the clipped short sentence. But when you turn 9, and your brain starts to do things it shouldn’t and your parents die in a car accident, you are owed a little slack.

He didn’t get any. Two halfway houses. The first one didn’t take. The owner-operator, referred to as “the Lady” was kind of a liar, a cheat and a bully.

She kind of disappeared. Weird that. And so is Ty.
